Le rythme dans la peau (The Rhythm in Your Skin) is a lecture-performance created in 2023 by Renata Andrade in collaboration with artist and researcher Clémence Canet. The work questions the exoticisation of samba and the stereotypes of Brazilian women. On stage, two voices and two bodies respond to each other: Clémence Canet delivers the critical speech, while Renata Andrade, dressed in a cardboard carnival costume inspired by her performance Exhibition – Femme cannibale, becomes a surface for projection and confrontation. Archival videos, voice-over commentary and performative gestures reveal the colonial construction of the gaze. Between humour and provocation, the piece reverses the power relationship: the samba dancer is no longer an object of desire but a subject who watches, thus exploring the notions of appropriation, reappropriation and empowerment.
