Code-races is an installation that confronts the myth of cannibalism and the legacy of 19th-century scientific racism. Presented in an enclosed space reminiscent of a freak show, it places the visitor in a position of curiosity mixed with uneasiness. In the centre, replicas of bones and skulls in white and black clay form a ‘bar code’ that takes the claim to ‘read’ race in anatomy to absurd extremes. Projections of anthropometric images appear on these surfaces, evoking the commodification of bodies and the fascination with exoticism. Part museum, part reliquary, Code-races challenges the systems of knowledge and spectacle that have naturalised racial inequality.
